The consensus among the staff is pretty much that the ratings system sucks. We spent months talking about implementing a user-based ratings system a while back but no one ever bothered to code it.
If you drop FFie a PM about it I'm sure she'd be interested, though.
I've been writing a rating system in PHP lately. Categories are 'graphics', 'playability', 'originality' and 'effort', each on a scale from 1 to 5. Only registered users can vote, once per map but not on their own maps. They can edit or delete their own votes if they change their mind.
The map display screen shows the average rating (total and per category) as well as the total number of ratings. The latter is a popup link to a page which displays all users' ratings with name and timestamp.
I did this mostly for learning purposes, and it's not 100% done yet, but of course I'd love to see it implemented on WMDB in one form or another. If any of the admins are interested I could put up a demonstration page to show you what it looks like in action. There's never been a definitive response from WMDB to the whole 'the rating system sucks' debate, so I figured that might just be because no one is willing to actually code a new system?
