hi everyone here in the shout valley. Please check my latest map, ive spent so long time with passion and high precision to edit it perfectly. id like some feedback and comments. stay worm
If you don't like your map tags, I suggest asking for a rereview and backing up your point :)
While you're of course correct in saying that you need to play a map to be able to review it, you also have to consider what the consequences are of that; it means that (given the small amount of actual reviewers at the moment) they will need to play this game for hours at a time just to be able to keep up with reviewing maps.
To put it bluntly; they have better things to do than that. Especially since it's something they do in their spare time and considering the bad maps that are made (that's not to say there are no good maps; I've seen some really good maps pass by lately)
As for community based rating, I'm not a fan. http://www.tus-wa.com/cups/cup-84/ This should illustrate it well. Look at the moderator rating on this community based rating system.
4 votes and the cup never even got accepted. How do they know what kind of a mod luz4k would've been? There has been no cup moderated by luz4k on that site!
And I can tell you this is not an isolated event. People vote for the wrong reasons (if any).
I say this knowing that the current system isn't perfect.
Of course i did Kuvvy ...!! impartial and unbiased view ftw!
there would be nothing worse in the world if no one said anything to anyone in their mistakes..
Of course people take different ways in saying things to people.. but it's better than being trapped in Rose Coloured glass-Heaven ( note: ignorance is NOT bliss)
Good outlook Kuvasz. I think that wmdb has become so absorbed in itself that is has forgotten about how much time many spend actually playing the game, and what is the point in a good-looking map if it is crappily-shaped to play on? Hmmmm... Oh well! :D I hope user review is on its way, it's painful to see so many erratic and frankly reckless reviews on maps that people have spent a lot of time and thought on. Over and out.
I can only hope you meant that in a positive way. I do have my mood swings but I try to watch what I say.
However, about the "[...] They are taking time going thru and reviewing it. [...]" bit, I can't agree with you. Loads of maps get tags that were clearly dished out in a hurry. Sprite and themed maps not getting their respective tags, for example. I've also seen maps go from an unjust 7EXP to a fair 3EXP. This erratic reviewing, as well as the fact that reviewers don't seem to get basic gaming mechanics (e.g., how much space is needed for a spawn trap, unreachable spawn points, very bad hide designs, bad pallette, too many colours, etc.) are what call for user reviews. Badly.
I’ve had some bad reviews that i haven't complained about (except to friends) but what it comes down to is -> R*e*s*p*e*c*t <--... even if you don't like what some mod has said, you gotta respect it. You took time to do a map.. sure.. They are taking time going thru and reviewing it.
Following the proper channels or contacting another mod or even saying something in the replies box can suffice.. (or make a torture shopper map :P.. j/k )
I will honestly say that i have been quite frustrated with most of my ratings (previously) and i know that while my maps may not be on par with the community, at the minimum they are unique :) so I’m proud of that.
I'm guilty of it too.. Looking at my work with.. rose coloured glasses... Thankfully there will always be Kuvasz with a comment to wake me up from That heaven:P
Going downhill you say Cheetah? I think your correct in some sense... some people seem to be going out of their way to be pedantic and just annoying... but with the good....etc etc.
Comment i wrote on the Unimaginative map.. (Kclown).
Perhaps users review their own mappage, and then if someone sees a bad map self-reviewed as good then someone hits the complain/suggest button and mods take a look
Also funky idea i just had (if someone else has had it I’m not stealing it, i don’t read the Shout box here much..)
A 5 or ten star system for e.g.
1.Graphics 2.Themes 3.Quality (Elaborate or not etc.) 4.Tight 5.Open
Erm 6-10 could be other categories and people who play maps can rank it and the final rating based apon an average sum of total votes per section.. The algorithm isn't too hard either...
This opens it up to Abuse by Popularity contests etc. of friends getting friends to vote, but then that’s where the mods come in..
Posting this on shoutbox too.. Not saying this idea is right for wmdb or right at all.. Just tryn to contribute : )
Voy4gEuR.. If u feel a need to diss my spelling after reading this bit, grammar or make remarks about people posting or spelling, perhaps you should rectify your Own Atrocious grammar..
I've just realised after getting a bad one myself, but the reviews round here are pretty crappy at the moment. It's almost like the reviewer(s) don't even play the game by the way they are reviewing. Maps are made to play on not to look at :S
